Christian books about love, relationships and life in general can please their readers without the use of cursing or explicit sexual content. When I look for a book of fiction, I'm just like other readers, I want to be entertained. I want to believe the story. I also care about the content of what is on my Kindle. What does that make me? A discriminating reader.
And I'm not the only one out there. According to one E-book market share chart showing e-book sales by category going into 2011, Christian fiction is in third place behind science fiction in second and literary classics in first. Wow!
Those are promising figures for the Christian author. These figures also tell us that the rise in Christian fiction sales is not a fluke. There are a large number of people out there who want good story telling and wholesome reading without having to open up their mind to influences from others who don't share the same standard.
The industry will listen too. They will listen because of the crisp sound of the dollar bills flying off in another direction--away from their pockets.
Here's are two charts I found in an article about the state of publishing by Janet Kobobel Grant.
The first chart depicts the large share of the market that Fiction claims. The second chart shows where Christian fiction ranks.
At the International Christian Retail Show last year, David Campbell, a Bowker representative, stated that Christian Fiction's claim in the fiction market according to a Bowker poll of 40,000 is a hefty 16%!
These figures are encouraging to me as a Christian fiction writer. I bask in the rays of sunshine that spotlight the booming market of Christian fiction today because they are rays that uplift and inspire a large group of people who are careful about what they see and put into their minds. Hollywood would do well to take note.
